The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Higher order galaxy correlation functions
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measure moments of the galaxy count probability distribution function in the two-degree field galaxy redshift survey (2dFGRS). The survey is divided into volume limited subsamples in order to examine the dependence of the higher order clustering on galaxy luminosity. We demonstrate the hierarchical scaling of the averaged p-point galaxy correlation functions, ξ̄p, up to p = 6. The hierarchical amplitudes, Sp = ξ̄p/ξ̄ p−1 2 , are approximately independent of the cell radius used to smooth the galaxy distribution on small to medium scales. On larger scales we find the higher order moments can be strongly affected by the presence of rare, massive superstructures in the galaxy distribution. The skewness S3 has a weak dependence on luminosity, approximated by a linear dependence on log luminosity. We discuss the implications of our results for simple models of linear and non-linear bias that relate the galaxy distribution to the underlying mass.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: Hierarchical galaxy clustering
We use the two-degree field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) to test the hierarchical scaling hypothesis: namely, that the p-point galaxy correlation functions can be written in terms of the two point correlation function or variance. This scaling is expected if an initially Gaussian distribution of density fluctuations evolves under the action of gravitational instability. We measure the volume...
متن کاملClustering Studies with the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey has now been completed and has mapped the three-dimensional distribution, and hence clustering, of galaxies in exquisite detail over an unprecedentedly large (∼ 108 h−3 Mpc3) volume of the local Universe. Here we highlight some of the major results to come from studies of clustering within the survey: galaxy correlation function and power spectrum analyses and the...
متن کاملThe Power Spectrum of Galaxies in the 2dF 100k Redshift Survey
We compute the real-space power spectrum and the redshift-space distortions of galaxies in the 2dF 100k galaxy redshift survey using pseudo-Karhunen-Loève eigenmodes and the stochastic bias formalism. Our results agree well with those published by the 2dFGRS team, and have the added advantage of producing easy-tointerpret uncorrelated minimum-variance measurements of the galaxy-galaxy, galaxyve...
متن کاملThe 2dF gravitational lens survey
The 2 degree Field (2dF) galaxy redshift survey will involve obtaining spectra of approximately 2.5 × 10 objects which have previously been identified as galaxy candidates on morphological grounds. Included in these spectra should be about ten gravitationally-lensed quasars, all with low-redshift galaxies as deflectors (as the more common lenses with highredshift deflectors will be rejected fro...
متن کاملNo Periodicities in 2dF Redshift Survey Data
We have used the publicly available data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey to test the hypothesis that there is a periodicity in the redshift distribution of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) found projected close to foreground galaxies. These data provide by far the largest and most homogeneous sample for such a study, yielding 1647 QSO–galaxy pairs. There is no ev...
